The first step is an exam with Dr. Blalock to assess your teeth and determine whether sealants are a good fit for you or your child. He will evaluate the chewing surfaces of the back teeth and identify any deep grooves or pits that are difficult to clean and at a higher risk for decay. Sealants are especially beneficial for children and teens, but adults with a history of cavities can benefit as well.
Before the sealant is applied, the teeth are thoroughly cleaned and dried. A special gel is then applied to the chewing surfaces for a short period of time to lightly roughen them, which helps the sealant bond securely to the tooth. The gel is rinsed off and the teeth are dried again in preparation for application.
Dr. Blalock or our dental hygienist will carefully paint the thin sealant coating onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. The sealant flows into the grooves and pits of the tooth, creating a smooth, protective barrier over the enamel. A special curing light is then used to harden the sealant quickly and securely in place.
Once the sealant has hardened, Dr. Blalock will check the application to make sure everything looks and feels right. The entire process is quick, comfortable, and requires no recovery time. Sealants are checked at every routine visit to monitor their condition, and can be reapplied if needed to maintain continuous protection.
